The Electric Local: New Visions in Vehicle Design
June 28th, 2011
An Investigation and Envisioning of the Automobile as Sustainable | Environmentally Friendly | Positive Progressive | Compelling
Presented by the University of Oregon Product Design Program
Opening reception: Monday, July 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Exhibit runs through July 30
Two Oregon-based companies, Arcimoto and Green Lite Motors, are committed to further the evolution of the automobile. These companies seek ways to make automobile design sustainable and environmentally friendly. The Arcimoto vehicle is currently 100 percent electric, and the Green Lite Motors vehicle is currently an electric hybrid. Both of these new vehicles are distinctive because they have three wheels and the occupants sit in tandem for increased aerodynamic performance.
Product Design Program students at the University of Oregon were asked to work on the ingress and egress of the vehicles for both the driver and a passenger, the experience of inhabiting and controlling the vehicle, the storage and loading of objects, and the continued improvement of safety and perceived safety for the occupants. On display at the University of Oregon in Portland Commons are the resulting posters and the two seatbuck, or auto body frame, prototypes.
