Drive Oregon Awarded Nearly $1 Million for Regional Electric Vehicle Showcase

PORTLAND, OR. (Monday, August 29, 2016) – Drive Oregon will receive $993,450 over three years from the U.S. Department of Energy to launch innovative regional marketing campaigns to engage consumers and promote the benefits of electric vehicles. Key project elements will include:

  • A permanent storefront to showcase of electric vehicles and charging equipment in downtown Portland. This will be adjacent to the city’s Electric Avenue, a hub of charging stations installed and operated by Portland General Electric. Staffed by knowledgeable brand-neutral experts, this showcase will offer ride and drives, long term electric vehicle rentals, and an active schedule of public events where visitors can experience a variety of vehicles and charging stations in “real-world” conditions. See renderings of the proposed site here: https://spaces.hightail.com/space/miIbp
  • A series of traveling “pop-up” showcases in Oregon and Washington, in partnership with electric utilities and other regional partners. These events will give the public, no matter where they are, the opportunity to take a test drive and learn about the benefits of driving electric.
  • A multimedia marketing campaign that will promote electric vehicles and encourage consumers to visit the Portland and pop-up showcases. This will include outreach to fleets, employers, and other key markets, and will test a range of innovative tactics.
Jeff Allen, Executive Director at Drive Oregon, stated, “The Northwest is already a leader in electric vehicle sales, but this project will allow us to use the region as a ‘living laboratory’ to test how we move from early adopters to an early majority of drivers. We’re excited to work with our dozens of project partners to create national models for success.”

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley expressed his support for the project, saying, “The benefits of electric vehicles are numerous—including cleaner air, fuel cost savings, and economic security—but consumers still have questions about how much they cost, where they can charge them, and if they are a right fit for their needs. The Showcase project will answer those questions in new ways, and in doing so, set the stage for increased adoption of electric vehicles in the Pacific Northwest.”

Charlie Allcock, Director of Business Development at Portland General Electric and board member of Drive Oregon, stated, “We look forward to hosting the showcase at our downtown Portland headquarters.  The showcase will complement our customer education and outreach work on the benefits of driving electric.”
